Publisher

Also known as Music Publisher

Music publishers are companies who manage the use and licensing of a musician’s music and ensure that artists and composers are paid when their music is used commercially.

Music publishers handle the administrative aspects of how an artist or composer’s work is used commercially and the logistical work of ensuring that they are paid for the use of their music in commercial settings.

In addition to the work of collecting payments and royalties, some publishers will proactively seek out opportunities to have their artists’ music performed and distributed, depending on the type of contract they sign. This can be anything from getting their songs into commercials and film productions to publishing sheet music books and helping with record printing. Publishing companies frequently assist their artists with any copyright work necessary. In return for these services, publishers earn a percentage of what the artist earns with their music.

Music publishers range from small independent entities managing a few artists all the way to massive corporate publishers who represent thousands of artists and generate hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Degrees in fields such as music business are valuable toward understanding how to navigate the music industry and start building up a professional network. Many people participate in internships at established music publishers as their first step in this career path.
