Alexander Technique Instructor
A person trained in Alexander technique helps others bring awareness to the habits of their body and guides them toward allowing the body optimal balance and movement.
The Alexander Technique is a method developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander. It focuses on building awareness of how we use our bodies and allowing the body to balance and move in a way that is informed by our anatomy. An Alexander Technique instructor uses hands-on techniques, body mapping instruction, and exercises with students in one-on-one lessons to help them find freedom in their movements and manage discomfort (physical or mental).
Becoming an Alexander Technique instructor requires completion of a teacher training course taught by an association-certified teacher. These courses often involve roughly 1600 hours of course participation and teaching practice lessons. The best Alexander instructors are observant, curious, detail-oriented, and excellent communicators.
The benefits of the Alexander Technique for artists has long been recognized. Alexander himself developed this technique as a remedy for his difficulties while acting. It is taught in institutions and music conservatories around the world. A musician’s perspective on this work and the freedom of expression it lends artists makes them a great candidate for teaching Alexander Technique to other artists.
