Wind Ensemble Musician

Wind ensemble musicians are brass, woodwind, and percussion musicians that specialize in performing repertoire written for wind ensemble. Often wind ensembles consist of 40-50 musicians, making it a large ensemble but not as large as a symphony orchestra (see Symphony/Philharmonic Orchestra Musician). Wind ensembles perform a variety of historic pieces written for wind ensemble along with newer works. Some ensembles may work with composers and premiere compositions.

A wind ensemble may perform only at one specific venue or may travel to different venues with performances often happening nights and weekends. Some ensembles may also go on tour to other areas in the country or around the world. Musicians within a wind ensemble may work only with that ensemble or may perform a combination of ensembles and solo performances.

Wind ensemble musicians are hired through an audition process and need advanced proficiency on their instrument. While a degree is not necessarily required, most performers obtain advanced level training through a collegiate program and private instruction. Many musicians combine their performance work with teaching, often running their own private studio or working at a college, university, or conservatory.
