Pop Musician

Pop musicians specialize in performing music aimed for a popular audience. This can include a variety of different sub-genres and styles including pop, hip-hop, or folk metal. The beauty of the pop music world is it is as varied as the musicians involved. Many pop music performers write their own music and (at least at first) promote themselves. They are in control of their own brand which requires a lot of entrepreneurship. Professional pop musicians or bands may sign with record labels; they sign an agreement to produce records that the label will promote and sell. A musician or group may have a manager who coordinates performances or they may manage and promote themselves. Some do all their own recording and post-production work.

Pop musicians come from different musical experiences and training. Obtaining a degree is not required, though some institutions offer programs specifically in pop music and most musicians at the professional level have received some advanced training. Musicians interested in doing their own recording and post-production work should look into audio engineering college programs.
