A person who preserves and restores musical and audiovisual materials.
Music Archivist
A music archivist is someone who performs the many jobs involved in preserving and restoring musical materials. They are often hired to do appraisals of a musical collection. Music archivists frequently work alongside a librarian in an academic setting. They may be found in a museum or other location where historical musical materials are being stored and preserved.
Music archivists are responsible for appraising materials, meaning they may find themselves reviewing hundred year old works and confirming their origin, or they may work to restore damaged materials so their information will remain available.
Since music archivists are required to have a comprehensive understanding of music history and library sciences, many will have degrees in both. Most archivist positions require an undergraduate degree, Master’s, and experience in library through internships or practicum.
