A mixer controls the mixing board during a concert or after recording to create the desired and balanced sound.
A mixer or mixing engineer is someone who, using the mixing board, will control the balance and quality of the sound during a concert or during post-production of a recording. Their job is to use their ears and technology to create a clear, balanced sound that best fits the musicians’ needs and the needs of the performance.
Mixers often work with a particular venue or studio. They usually work alone at the mixing board but will sometimes work with another mixer. They are a vital part of the backstage or production team and, while they may do their portion alone, will work alongside other engineers, the musicians, and many other production crew members to produce a final product.
A mixer is expected to have training in audio engineering or sound design. This is most often done through a bachelor’s degree in audio engineering or sound design but internships are also possible.
