Ministry/Church Musician
Ministry musicians perform in worship settings to enhance the religious experience.
Music has long been connected to worship and modern churches continue to incorporate music into their religious services in new ways. Organists and piano accompanists are some of the most common church musicians, arranging and performing works for services, accompanying the choir, offering performance services for weddings and funerals, and more. An organist may also serve a leadership role in the church as a music director for any music performed.
In addition to the traditional roles of the choir and organ in many Christian religious practices, many contemporary churches hire bands who specialize in rock and R&B. Church bands may perform hymns and worship-based music in a variety of contemporary styles. These bands can perform an established setlist of songs, or the church may commission the band to compose new works.
While most church organizations have no requirement that hired musicians practice the same religion as their church, the most appealing candidates for these roles will be passionate practitioners of their faith and believe strongly in music’s ability to elevate and enhance worship.
