Forensic Musicologist
A forensic musicologist specializes in analyzing music to confirm or deny similarities for legal purposes.
A forensic musicologist is someone who is hired to analyze music and confirm whether that music breaks any copyright law. They may work as consultants with companies, often in advertising or film, to confirm that an advertising jingle is not too similar to copyrighted property. They may also be called to work within a court during a copyright pursuit.
Forensic musicologists must have a wide knowledge of music history, great music analysis skills, and a basic understanding of copyright law. They also often use different music technologies and are expected to get training in music technology prior to their employment.
