Cinematographer

Also known as Directory of Photography

The cinematographer is in charge of the camera and any lighting in a video production.

Cinematographers (sometimes called Directors of Photography) are responsible for what the viewer sees through the camera and the way in which the subject matter is presented. In collaboration with the director, the cinematographer will help transform the script and director’s vision into reality by determining exactly how it will look to the audience through the camera. This involves planning which cameras will be used, what type of film, the aspect ratio, shot composition, lighting, and other considerations for each scene of the production. A cinematographer’s creative work on a project helps determine the look of a film, setting the visual tone for the entire production and ultimately communicating a story through the camera.

The cinematographer’s role is as much a visually creative one as it is logistical. They will serve as the liaison between the director and various production crews (set designers, actors, costuming, lighting, and more) and must be organized enough to ensure filming sessions run on schedule and have all of the necessary equipment and teams ready in advance. Cinematographers need to work well as part of a team and manage many moving pieces at the same time.

Musician’s creative skills and experience working as part of a team go far in a role like the cinematographer's. A keen understanding of music and performance is especially valuable for cinematographer’s who specialize in shooting music videos for performing artists.
