Catalog Specialist
Also known as Catalog Developer, Cataloger
A catalog specialist maintains the documentation of a collection of music.
A catalog specialist is someone who documents a collection of music. Often, a catalog specialist will work closely with a music librarian and will document the compositions and recordings available in that musical library. This means maintaining an accurate list of all materials that are currently in that library, where they are available, and what condition the materials are in.
Catalog specialists can work in libraries within universities, radio stations, record labels, anywhere there might be a music library.
Catalog specialists need certification and experience in a music library, often through entry jobs within a library. Some catalog specialists will obtain a Bachelor's in Library Sciences. Music catalog specialists will find it helpful to have a background in music and at least a general understanding of music history. An aspiring music catalog specialist may choose to get a degree in music and complete a certification program or some combination of music and library sciences.
